Twenty-one is a symbolic number that is often featured in Dear Esther, either in morse code, monologues or number of specific objects in a chapter.

Meaning[]

Twenty-one is a number in the Fibonacci sequence, and is therefore also in the golden ratio (the spiral of which is carved into the sand in the beach in the first chapter, the end of the spiral being the electrical symbol for a Light Emitting Diode, linking it to the radio mast). Other than this, I am not sure why it is important to the story. It may represent the narrators mathematical/ engineering mind.
